Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Van Veen)
On February 14, 2026, the Grote Kerk Naarden will transform into an oasis of tranquility during the Valentine’s Day Lying-Down Concert. Pianist Jeroen van Veen will perform Canto Ostinato by Simeon ter Holt: a hypnotic work that seems to stretch out time. Lying on your own mat or air mattress, you’ll experience the concert amid the church’s Gothic grandeur.
This lying-down concert is all about lying down, listening, and letting go. Van Veen’s piano sounds weave through the space like breaths, sometimes clear, sometimes almost inaudible. Canto Ostinato is a piece of music that envelops you: an invitation to surrender to endless melodies, while the church embraces you.
Repetition forms the foundation of Ter Holt’s composition, but the piece is never static. Each cycle sounds both familiar and new. The church’s acoustics enhance this effect, as if the walls are softly singing along. Jeroen van Veen, who knew Simeon ten Holt personally, is the interpreter who knows when to steer and when to let go. Even after more than 500 performances, every performance remains unique and different. Come lie down and lose yourself in the timelessness of the Canto Ostinato.
