Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Wishful Singing & Bergwerff)

This meditative and timeless music sharpens all your senses.

‘Canto Ostinato’ by Simeon ten Holt is a classic hit. The piece has been in the top 10 of the annual Classical Top 400 on Radio 4 in the Netherlands for years. Ten Holt originally wrote the piece for piano. Aart Bergwerff has now adapted the composition for organ and female voices, adding a completely different dimension to this world-famous work.

Canto Ostinato – often affectionately called ‘the Canto’ – is an quintessential meditative piece. No two versions are the same. The composer leaves the number of repetitions, the dynamics and the way of playing to the performer(s). Aart Bergwerff is a versatile concert organist who likes to look for new ways and forms in organ culture. He has been organist of the Grote Kerk in Breda since 2012. Wishful Singing consists of five classically trained singers with flawless voices. With passion and expression they sing works from the Renaissance and Baroque to folk music and close harmony.

When you think of Indonesia, the spicy scents of the oriental kitchen probably come to mind. But perhaps also wajang puppets, chirping monkeys swinging through the jungle, or a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Or the traditional dances in beautiful clothing.
