Simeon ten Holt: Natalon en mi & Solo Devil Dance 4
Innovative, controversial and inspiring but above all a pioneer, Simeon ten Holt can undoubtedly be considered one of the most important Dutch composers of the 20th century.
The “Canto Ostinato” is regularly performed by pianists and symphony orchestras from all over the world. His music is a source of inspiration for many choreographers, filmmakers, writers and plasticists.
In Natalon and Mi Simeon ten Holt pushes the neotonal path he has taken to the extreme: the piece is in the tonality of mi major, which is explicitly stated in the title. At the same time the title refers to .. A/. TA-LON, a composition for mezzo-soprano and together that marks the highlight of Ten Holt’s serial period. The title thus symbolizes his final termination.
A small anecdote: composer Simeon ten Holt met Moos d’Herripon, the mother of Winter Wieringa, who was heavily pregnant, just before giving birth. He gently touched his stomach and noticed that the child in Winter was very active, as if he was dancing indoors. A day later Winter was born. Inspired by this, Ten Holt decided to dedicate his ‘Fourth Solo Devil’s Dance’ to Winter. It also became his last composition for solo piano.
