Simeon ten Holt: Soloduiveldansen

You have to dare, with a title like that. Fortunately, the Solo Devil Dances that Hannes Minnaar (photo) plays tonight sound less terrifying than you might think. Composer Simeon ten Holt, who was born exactly a century ago this year, has become immortal with his Canto Ostinato for four grand pianos. In Solo Devil’s Dance II and III for solo piano, Ten Holt uses a comparable hypnotic idiom of repetitive patterns. Minnaar can decide for himself how often he repeats certain sections.

Hannes Minnaar has the gift of making music shine without frills. He plays Bach, Fauré and Schumann, but also defends contemporary music. Like Ten Holt’s relatively unknown Devil’s Dance cycle. The short first part was already created in 1955, in an avant-garde style. From the 1980s, when he had found his own recognizable voice, Ten Holt composed the parts that Minnaar plays tonight.
