Sipke Hoekstra: Soundscape and toccata for orchestra

A concert with Victor Julien-Laferrière can be called ‘World Class’. The young French cellist finished on a lonely high at the 2017 Queen Elisabeth Competition. Since that breakthrough, he has caused a stir worldwide, literally from here to Tokyo. He makes his debut at the NNO with Haydn’s infectious Cello Concerto in D, one of the most infectious pieces in the entire cello repertoire. Of the ‘original classical’ composers, Haydn is the most playful: he composed not only to satisfy his clients, but also for the musicians’ enjoyment. That can be clearly heard in this work.

The NNO is also presenting a brand new work by the Frisian composer Sipke Hoekstra in its world premiere: a fascinating soundscape full of old and new elements. The closing is the First Symphony by Johannes Brahms. In this way, Brahms followed in the footsteps of the great Ludwig van Beethoven, so convincingly that the piece was called ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’ at its premiere. It is a varied piece full of mood changes, with beautiful parts for every instrument group. Above all, Brahms proved himself here as a creator of beautiful, enchanting melodies.
