Smit / Lachman / Wertheim / Kattenburg / Bosmans / Flothuis / Van Delden / Smit Sibinga

A journey of discovery through beautiful, unknown musical treasures by Amsterdam Jewish composers. Due to regulations during the Second World War, the work of these composers was no longer allowed to be performed.

As Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary, the Netherlands also celebrates almost 80 years of liberation. A great opportunity to pay special attention to these composers and to bring the then banned music back from oblivion.

The program will be presented by Lodewijk Asscher, former councilor and acting mayor of Amsterdam, from a well-known Jewish Amsterdam family and cousin of conductor Hans Vonk. With the explanation and presentation he will stimulate with truth, goodness and beauty in the personal stories about the composers.

Hans Lachman (arranger of Max Tak’s Tuschinski orchestra and the Snip and Snap revue) wrote his Artis Suite: Nine animal portraits inspired by the Amsterdam Zoo. In addition to works by a number of Jewish composers from WWII, the Yiddish singer Shura Lipovsky will perform a number of her own songs. She is one of the leading interpreters of Yiddish song and one of the few who writes new Yiddish songs and thus revives the destroyed culture.

This storytelling concert, played by ten top musicians, is also suitable for children.

In collaboration with the Conservatory of Amsterdam and docent Ralph van Raat, the Leiden Salon presents four concerts featuring Dutch (piano) music from the 20th century.
