New Ear’s Spatial Listening program focuses on spatial sound works, where the distribution and localization of sounds is a primary compositional parameter and a central feature for the listener.

Tilen Lebar will present LIMEN VIII, a long form sound installation.

Liner Notes::

In 2021, the artist began exploring the concept of liminal spaces, which has since influenced their interdisciplinary work. Liminal spaces—such as abandoned buildings, corridors, and malls—are originally designed for crowds, but their abandonment transforms them, evoking emotional responses tied to nostalgia for unknown times (“Anemoia”) and a sense of emptiness (“Kenopsia”).

The artist draws from Arnold van Gennep’s theory of liminality, rooted in the Latin word “Līmen,” meaning threshold. Inspired by its fluidity and anthropological significance, the artist has developed an ongoing series titled Līmen, exploring transitional states.

Līmen VIII, the 10th work in the series, is a concert sound installation that moves through three stages:

1. Preliminality, where a minimalistic sonic environment forms from improvisations with electroacoustic guitar.
2. Liminality, where the sound evolves through microtonal changes and interference, representing identity transformation.
3. Postliminality, where spectral mutations occur, creating a new sonic identity that feels static yet comes to life through spatialization.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Culture Republic of Slovenia.
