Victor Baez: La luz bermeja
Victor Baez’s La luz bermeja at Sounds of Now Vienna On August 14, 2026, the Quasars Ensemble will perform the Austrian premiere of Victor Baez’s La luz bermeja (The Crimson Light) during the Sounds of Now Vienna festival. The performance will take place at the Konzertsaal Future Art Lab (FAL) of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria. Written for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, this evocative work explores the delicate boundary between breath and sorrow. Programme Note In Juan Rulfo’s seminal novel Pedro Páramo, a ghost describes the moment he saw his lover departing the earthly realm a long time ago. On that day, he recalls, the light was the same as today, only “…not as crimson”. He warns against sighing too much, because sighs are “sips of life that we throw away” and we might die of sadness. This is a piece about the moment when breathing becomes sighing. La luz bermeja was premiered on October 21, 2024, by the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble at the Synesthesia Lab festival in Kazan, Russia.
