Victoria Vita Poleva: Turn the River
Although they evolved in very different contexts, Liszt and Shostakovich shared a taste for monumental and contrasting scores. Liszt constructed his Concerto in the form of variations: the theme with Hungarian accents passes through all the colours, from tender to martial, from intimate to brilliant. Born a few months after Stalin’s death in 1953, Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony testifies to a relief, after years of tense relations with the authorities – it was nicknamed the “Symphony of the Thaw”. All the clouds had not disappeared, but the composer could now hope for a less gloomy future, and the symphony ends joyfully.
