Ville Raasakka: Public Talk about ecology

Ecocritical contemporary music and its impact on the protection of the Baltic Sea, among other things, will be discussed by Juha Torvinen, docent of musicology and university lecturer at the University of Helsinki, and Ville Aslak Raasakka, a composer, sound artist and sound designer from Helsinki who works with ecology. The discussion is moderated by cultural journalist Siskotuulikki Toijonen.

In his research, Torvinen has familiarized himself with the history of Finnish music, music philosophy, esoteric thinking in music and the relationship between music and nature.

Raasakka teaches ecological methods at the University of the Arts, where he also works in the ecological sustainability strategy group. He also teaches composition at the Sibelius Academy, where he is completing his doctorate. Raasaka’s recent ecocritical compositions have focused on the use of coal, oil and wood.

The discussion event is organized by the music section of the Finnish Critics Association. The Helsinki Speaks event is organized by the Savoy Theater and the John Nurminen Foundation in cooperation with Helsingin Sanomat.
