Willem Jeths: Maktub
Akropolis Reed Quintet debuts in Amsterdam with a performance of Maktub by Willem Jeths, along with compositions by Marc Mellits, Augusta Read Thomas, and Jeff Scott.
“A sonically daring ensemble who perform new works with charisma and integrity” (BBC Music Magazine), the Akropolis Reed Quintet finally makes its debut in the city where their genre was born.
The Western Hemisphere’s most prolific reed quintet and one of America’s most heralded chamber ensembles, Akropolis will perform a 1-hour concert featuring 3 new American works, including “The Forest of Shifting Time”—a ballet suite by “true virtuoso composer” (The New Yorker), Augusta Read Thomas—plus an homage to their parent ensemble, Calefax, by Dutch composer Willem Jeths.
They will also perform the most well-known reed quintet work in America, Splinter, by Chicago-based composer Marc Mellits, and a short selection by Jeff Scott which celebrates the African-American history of Akropolis’ home city of Detroit, Michigan.
