Willem Jeths: Viaggio Italiano

Willem Jeths and Italian travelogues

Former artistic director Kees Vlaardingerbroek, connoisseur of Italian music, has compiled a history of Italian travel descriptions and poetry through the ages. It became the basis for sensitive choral sounds by Willem Jeths and his Viaggio italiano (Italian journey), which was commissioned by the NTR Saturday Matinee. In the central part, an Italian epitaph can be heard for an eighteenth-century Dutch traveler who hoped that Italy would improve his health. He died there, aged 24. Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle sounds more devout than ever after this.
