Fest und Friede is the title of the 15th Final Choir edition, festive and deeply lived. The title piece on the program is Schoenberg’s monumental Friede auf Erden. Silvestrov, who lives in Kiev, wrote a moving Gebet für die Ukraïne, flanked by two compositions by Hindemith, a composer whose works were banned by the Nazis as Entartete Kunst during the Second World War. Sweelinck’s timeless psalms sound from the Dutch golden age in which the psalmist wishes peace for godly people. Peace is sung in Brahms’ festive Fest- und Gedenkspüche. Poet Ivanka de Ruijter wonders whether time is made of water in Tij, William Knight’s latest composition. Heppener sings about the devils who like to disturb the peace and tranquility, and the program ends with Mendelssohn’s Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren.
