A rich tradition of commissioned compositions for the Netherlands Chamber Choir.

In the nearly 90-year existence of the Netherlands Chamber Choir, many compositions by great contemporary composers have been written especially for the choir. We are adding these works to the choir repertoire of the future. During Legacy for the Future, we will sing an anthology from this. A very diverse evening with something for everyone!

Maxim Shalygin

"Creativity is an unconscious act of insanity, in a burst of which the truth is born. No matter how beautiful or disgusting it may seem to people far from madness, its value is beyond doubt, both for the author and for those able to sense its invisible beauty. After all, gratitude for endless trials and suffering brings joy and blissful emptiness… Being shocked by music is about pain turning into beauty and getting under your skin, taking away your breath; about everything stopping to move. I want to be scratched inside by sound and experience the fleeting, invisible beauty." - Maxim Shalygin

His compositions include chamber, vocal, symphonic, electro-acoustic music, as well as music for theater, ballet and film. Shalygin has participated in many competitions internationally. He received a honorable mention at the Gaudeamus competition 2012 for his work “Letters to Anna” symphony for violin solo. The same year his music was selected for Gesamt project of Lars von Trier. Shalygin was a composer-in-residence in IZOLYATSIA – Platform for Cultural Initiatives (Donetsk, Ukraine) and Storioni Festival (Brabant, Netherlands). Shalygin’s works have been performed in festivals such as: Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Netherlands), Sound Ways (Russia), Musical Youth Tribune (Ukraine), GOGOLFEST (Ukraine), Spring Festival (Netherlands), International Forum of Young Music (Ukraine), Music Premieres of the Season (Ukraine), UNEVEN – mini-festival by Lonneke van Leth (Netherlands).

William Knight

William Knight started his musical career as a chorister of St Paul’s Cathedral, London. He read Music at the University of York whilst singing as the Tenor Choral Scholar at York Minster. He now works as a composer and professional freelance singer in the Netherlands, and is a core member of the Nederlands Kamerkoor.

Rudolf Escher

General Rudolf George Escher was born on January 8th, 1912 in Amsterdam. He was the son of Emma Brosy and geologist Berend George Escher, who also gave him piano lessons. On March 17th, 1989, Escher died from an incurable liver disease.

Krists Auznieks: Phaedra in vlammen

Phaedra in vlammen (Phaedra in Flames is a modern take on the classic love drama, written by Nino Haratischwili (who also wrote The Eighth Life (for Brilka)). Starring Malou Gorter as Queen Phaedra, Yela de Koning as her forbidden love Persea, and featuring live music by the New European Ensemble.
