Yannis Kyriakides: La Mer

In Scapino Ballet Rotterdam’s spectacular production La Mer, running from 8 October 2026 to 3 March 2027, the ocean finds its voice through a groundbreaking collaboration of dance, visual art, and music. Choreographer Nanine Linning uses 25 dancers to physicalize a fragile ecosystem, transforming the stage into a living, breathing sea. At the heart of this multidisciplinary 75-minute performance lies a profound musical dialogue crafted by Yannis Kyriakides. By introducing contemporary electronic soundscapes into the impressionistic world of Claude Debussy’s iconic 1905 masterpiece, Kyriakides establishes a haunting auditory contrast. This sonic tension directly mirrors the shift from historical romance to the raw ecological reality of today’s oceans. Yannis Kyriakides plays a pivotal role in redefining how the audience experiences the power and fragility of the sea. Known for his ability to fuse acoustic instruments with digital technology, Kyriakides does not simply accompany the dancers; he builds an unsettling electronic environment that challenges Debussy’s traditional melodies. His modern soundscapes represent the invasive disruptions of the modern world, such as rising temperatures and ecological collapse. During the premiere performances at the Nieuwe Luxor Theater, this musical tension reaches its peak. Kyriakides’ electronic layers merge seamlessly with live orchestrations by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the vocal textures of the Laurens Collegium, all led by the pioneering conductor and performer Barbara Hannigan. The auditory depth created by Kyriakides is further amplified by a striking visual landscape. Internationally renowned Japanese couture designer Yuima Nakazato translates the fluid movements of the water into more than eighty intricate costumes, giving the ecosystem a physical form. Simultaneously, the digital video sculptures of visual artist Heleen Blanken wrap the stage in shifting imagery that underscores humanity’s role as both the destroyer and the victim of the ocean’s wrath. Together with Kyriakides’ compelling score, these artistic disciplines create an immersive world where the sea ultimately confronts the audience, demanding to be heard.
