Yannis Kyriakides: Lunch Music
In 2014, the Dutch/Cypriot composer Yannis Kyriakides wrote the music for the performance Naked Lunch by the city-Groningen dance company Club Guy & Roni based on the book of the same name by William Burroughs. The American William Burroughs (1914 –1997), one of the prominent figures of the Beat Generation, accidentally shoots his wife in a drunken William Tell game. He processes that event in Naked Lunch. A book in which he broke through all literary codes and wrote about the ‘interzone’, a place where dreams come true, a bible for creativity and a free existence. Kyriakides recently adapted his theater music for the concert stage. With this, Lunch Music was born, an exciting polyphonic collage of words, sound, percussion, gestures, slightly psychotic poetry and hilarious, sometimes banal, humor.
