Jan-Peter de Graaff: World premiere 'Het gouden kalf' (The Golden Calf)

What does the search for a new identity look like? We regularly see the refugee's journey in the news, but what about afterwards, at the place of destination? It is this journey we make in the oratorio Het Gouden Kalf by Jan-Peter de Graaff, which will premiere at the Musica Sacra arts festival in Maastricht on 16 September 2022.

Musica Sacra - Exodus

Human migration is of all times. Therefore, the theme of Musica Sacra 2022 - Exodus - is too, although it is unfortunately more topical than ever. This topicality and urgency throw us back to our own motives, our thinking and acting. At the same time, they raise questions about the role of the arts: can art be a mirror of the times? Or is art a rear-view mirror that helps us carry the day? And: does art offer solace?

The Golden Calf

Composer Jan-Peter de Graaff was commissioned by Musica Sacra, Studium Chorale and philharmonie zuidnederland to take on this role. Together with librettist Jibbe Willems, De Graaff explores the world of Biblical Exodus. Their oratorio Het Gouden Kalf (The Golden Calf) is inspired by the epic exodus of a people in search of a new future. Timeless material that is powerfully reflected in our times. The biblical story of Moses, Aaron, the Israelite people and the golden calf is the basis of the newly written work. De Graaff was also inspired by Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt. De Graaff's oratorio has become a psychological drama, with the golden calf as the ultimate nostalgic reference point, told by Aaron (Dries Vanhegen of Toneelgroep Maastricht), with the Studium Chorale choir alternating between the people and some of their individual representatives. The small ensemble of Philharmonie Zuid Nederland adds a vast melodramatic sound, and the work - characteristic of the young composer - is rich in emotion.

Jan-Peter de Graaff

Jan-Peter de Graaff is currently one of the most successful young Dutch composers. His compositions convince with their subtle play of timbres, emotive harmonies and intense narrative power. He writes accessible music filled with profound human drama, often fuelled by his fascination with the ever-changing balance between man and his environment. De Graaff has won various prizes for his compositions and his work has been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orkest, Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Nederlands Kamerkoor and soloists such as Maya Fridman and Katrien Baerts, among others.
