Luc Van Hove: Piano Trio, Op. 57

The Peter Benoit Fund, established in 1902 by Edward Keurvels, continues its mission to preserve and promote the works of Peter Benoit and other Flemish composers. As Flanders’ oldest heritage association, the fund also supports contemporary composers by programming and promoting their works. In its upcoming autumn concert, the fund presents a program that highlights the versatility and richness of contemporary chamber music. The concert will feature the De la Haye Ensemble, comprising Jeong Sun Goo (violin), Daan De Vos (cello), and Bart Meuris (piano), who specialize in juxtaposing classical masterpieces with contemporary compositions.

A focal point of the evening is the performance of Luc Van Hove’s “Trio op. 57,” a five-part work dedicated to the De la Haye Ensemble. Van Hove, born in 1957, is known for his deep understanding of the Western musical tradition. In this composition, he pays homage to French composer Olivier Messiaen, reflecting a blend of traditional and modern elements. The ensemble’s interpretation of this piece is anticipated to offer insight into Van Hove’s compositional style and his engagement with musical heritage.

The program also includes “Memento Mori” by Wim Henderickx (1962–2022), a piano solo piece composed in 2005. This work was inspired by the visual art of Ronald De Preter and is known for its contemplative nature. Additionally, Pieter Schuermans’ “Sonate voor cello en piano,” written for his eighteen-year-old son, will be performed. This sonata is characterized by its tonal harmonies and intricate rhythmic structures, offering both accessibility and sophistication. The evening will be further enriched by a performance of “Phrases” by Annelies Van Parys, presented by students from the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.

This concert exemplifies the Peter Benoit Fund’s commitment to fostering a dialogue between tradition and innovation in the realm of chamber music. By featuring works from both established and contemporary Flemish composers, the event underscores the dynamic evolution of the region’s musical landscape. The De la Haye Ensemble’s dedication to exploring and presenting such repertoire contributes significantly to the appreciation and understanding of contemporary chamber music.
