Rieteke Hölscher: Chorus of Invisible Angels

“Chorus of Invisible Angels” is a composition that reflects on the theme of exile from paradise, based on the biblical story in the book of Genesis. The choir, representing invisible angels, reflects the loss of harmony and the irreversible separation of humanity from the perfect state of paradise. The music begins with a fragile, hesitant motif, expressing the uncertainty and sorrow of exile.

The repeating and imitative motifs create a sense of a constant, unavoidable reminder of what has been lost. This repetition suggests that the memory of the original harmony with creation is always present, but fading and becoming harder to grasp, much like humanity’s desire to return to paradise.

In the end, the music fades into swirling patterns, symbolizing the fading memories of paradise, ultimately disappearing into silence. This silence becomes the final reminder of exile, a reality that humanity cannot escape.

Written in 2020 as part of Keystones – Creation, this composition captures the emotions of humanity throughout history. It reflects on the story of creation and exile, connecting mythological and biblical themes with a universal reflection on the human condition and our relationship with creation.
