Sasha Witteveen performs Calliope Tsoupaki: Scorpio

Calliope Tsoupaki wrote a new work for double bass solo. It was especially composed for Sasha Witteveen and her “Dutch Classical talent” finalist concert tour at the most outstanding concert halls in The Netherlands including famous venues such as Haarlem Philharmonie, Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in Amsterdam, Nieuw Kerk – Amare Den Haag, De Doelen in Rotterdam, Tivoli/Vredenburg in Utrecht.

Sasha Witteveen

Sasha Witteveen takes the listener from darkness to light. As a theme or build-up for her concert, she quotes Martin Luther King: ‘Darkness cannot dispel darkness, only light can.’ This is achieved, for instance, by a dramatic transition from minor to major. She lets her double bass speak of loss and comfort, captivity and freedom, injustice and honesty, sarcasm and humour, drama and love. At 19, she is the youngest finalist ever. The jury: ‘What a stalwart behind the double bass! Her decisiveness and determination is impressive, she knows exactly what she wants. Without fear, her fingers race across the fretboard and tame her instrument.’
