Spiros Mazis: Radiant Threads

In early May, the Athens State Orchestra will present the world premiere of “Radiant Threads,” a concerto for two horns and orchestra by Greek composer Spiros Mazis. Performances will take place at major Greek music venues across the cities of Piraeus, Lamia, and Larissa.

Composer about the piece:

“The title Radiant Threads arose from a deep need to express an imaginative vision inspired by hidden, multicolored paths and by invisible routes woven between worlds. Threads of light which, though unseen, are always present, multicolored, and radiant, like lines of energy shimmering through infinity.

These threads carry something of the mystery of invisible energy, a light that cannot be touched, yet can be deeply felt within. It is a diffused glow that connects sound with space, the past with the future, the known with the unexplored. The work unfolds in three movements, fast, slow, and fast, alluding to the classical concerto form while at the same time transcending its boundaries. The form takes on a sense of flow, like the movement of these radiant threads, which never remain still.

From a technical point of view, I was especially interested in incorporating microtonal intervals, particularly in the horns, through the use of innovative fingerings that I have invented and developed for all brass instruments. This microtonal palette functions like a timbral whisper, enriching both the melodic and harmonic texture of the work.

My main aim was to express this idea of threads: a cosmic weaving, a network that unites the universe. I followed this imaginative image of the threads, allowing it to carry me along and take shape through sound. Perhaps, in the end, these luminous, radiant threads are the invisible bonds that connect us all to the vast, eternal universe.”
