Vladimir Martynov: The Beatitudes, special video release

The Golden Era String Quartet (USA) performs The Beatitudes by Vladimir Martynov for a special video release on August 31.

In this performance, the violinists and violist employ the distinctive Golden Era (Russian) bow technique, bringing a unique richness of tone to Martynov’s contemplative work. Rooted in the traditions of Orthodox spirituality, the music turns inward through its meditative repetitions and call-and-response phrasing, drawing the listener toward inner truth and reflection.

The video highlights this dialogue of voices with two filming locations inside the Cathedral, each musician featured in dual parts. Special thanks to the Cathedral Church of Saint Mark’s in Salt Lake City, Utah, for providing such a beautiful setting.

“The Beatitudes” is a 1998 composition by Russian composer Vladimir Martynov for vocal ensemble and later adapted for string quartet by the Kronos Quartet, drawing from the text of the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount. Originally a response to the 9/11 attacks, it has been performed by various groups, including the Kronos Quartet, and featured in the 2014 Academy Award-winning film La Grande Bellezza. The piece is characterized by its simple, tonal language and meditative qualities, often associated with mysticism and minimalism.

Performers: Emily Ricks violin, Allison O’Bryant violin, Melanie Richards viola, Angelyn Foster cello
