General
Eric Verbugt was born on September 9, 1966, in Asten, The Netherlands.

Education
From 1984-1992, Verbugt studied composition at the Maastricht Conservatory with Henri Delnooz and Robert HP Platz. In 1989 and 1991, Centre Acanthes gave him a scholarship to attend masterclasses from Luigi Nono and Elliot Carter, respectively.

In 1990, Verbugt attended the Sonology course at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Two years later, he participated in the Darmstädter Ferienkurse, where Teodoro Anzellotti played the premiere of …, but that’s too long ago for him to remember. In 2001-2002 he received a scholarship for the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg. Subsequently, he participated in the Darmstädter Ferienkurse and Stockhausenkurse in Kürten.

Compositions
After his studies, Verbugt received commissions from the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst, the Aeolian Trio, Provincie Limburg, Lantaren/Venster and the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst. His piece, Bilder (aus dem Novecento) got an honorable mention in the International Gaudeamusweek. He was artist-in-residence at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg. Several times his work was performed in the Darmstädter Ferienkurse. In 2002, he gave a lecture there about his proseproject pijnberichten, a large scale project that combines prose (a novel) and music. Almost every composition that he composed since 1996 is a part of pijnberichten.

Verbugt’s compositions have been played by the Radio Kamer Filharmonie, Schönberg Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Ensemble 88, the Doelen Ensemble, Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, Nederlands Kamerkoor, Cappella Amsterdam, oh ton ensemble, Nederlands Studenten Kamerkoor, insomnio, Ernest Rombout, Gerard Bouwhuis, Johan Faber, Lavinia Meijer, Ensemble LOOS, Ruysdael Kwartet, and Ralph van Raat, among others.

In the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, his piece, …, ci tace, was performed with soloists Ernest Rombout and Laura Aikin. This composition was commissioned by the ZaterdagMatinee. His piece, streven, for violin was played by Joris van Rijn on an NM-Classics CD. A Cavalli Records CD with five compositions from pijnberichten was released with performances by Gerard Bouwhuis, Johan Faber and Ernest Rombout. His piece, Bilder (aus dem Novecento), appeared on CPO, performed by the ohton-ensemble.

At the moment, Verbugt composes for Cappella Amsterdam and Roberto Fabbricciani, among others. His works are described as “unusual” (Ernst Vermeulen, NRC). He has the talent to use several compositions and turn it into one big composition. When these works are performed simultaneously they reveal new connections between them which results in unexpected experiences for the listener. Joyce and Arno Schmidt Verbugt are his main sources of inspiration, authors who excel in offering various levels of meaning.
