Rick van Veldhuizen: Lantaarns (Lointaines)

A refined, accessible and varied theatrical concert, where a new work by Rick van Veldhuizen forms the heart of the program. The piece, a composition commission by Shane van Nerden, was written for two pianos: a traditional concert grand piano and an upright piano in a completely newly developed, pure tuning. Image and text projections and spoken text guide the listener like a lantern through music by Van Veldhuizen, Debussy, Scriabin and Ives.

Shane van Nerden ‘A romantic and poet par excellence! With his amazing technique, excellent timing and storytelling flair, he captures the audience’s attention. He is not afraid to take risks!’, is how the jury of Dutch Classical Talent described the American-Dutch pianist Shane van Nerden. Despite his young age, the American-Dutch pianist has already had quite a career. For example, last season he contributed to the highly praised Toonzetters project.

Rick van Veldhuizen was one of the young composers whose work was in the spotlight at Toonzetters last season. His energetic pieces stand out because of the brutal mix of influences from pop and dance music combined with classical gestures and electronic music. Van Veldhuizen is particularly in his element in the interaction with other art forms.
