Dutch composer Douwe Eisenga has made the sheet music of his widely acclaimed piano work For Mattia available as a free download.
The composition was written in 2017 at the request of the parents of Mattia, their daughter who had died two years earlier after a prolonged struggle with mental illness. Since its release, For Mattia has consistently ranked highly in the Classical Top 400, an annual list of the most beloved classical works as voted by Dutch radio listeners. Critics have described the piece as “a universe full of wonders,” while audiences often refer to it as among the most moving music written since Johann Sebastian Bach.
As a gesture of gratitude for the impact the work has had, Eisenga has decided to offer the sheet music of a shorter version free of charge. No registration, donation, or email address is required. The composer describes the gesture as a simple gift to the musical community.
Alongside the score, visitors can access the story behind the composition and related video material via his website. Eisenga expresses the hope that pianists—both professional and amateur—as well as teachers will share the music further, allowing more people to experience the comfort, emotion, and connection it offers.
The original, longer version of For Mattia remains available through Donemus and the composer’s official website.
