Alla Zagaykevych / Maxim Shalygin
An evening of songs for a self-accompanying singer Viktoriia Vitrenko, featuring music by Agata Zubel, Alla Zagaykevych, Yin Wang, Sven-Ingo Koch, and Maxim Shalygin. Dedicated to Maria Kolesnikova.
On March 25, 2026, at 19:00, the Bayerische Akademie de Schönen Künste München will present “LIMBO,” a solo performance by Ukrainian singer and pianist Viktoriia Vitrenko. This event is part of the “Unerhörte Musik” contemporary music series and is dedicated to Maria Kalesnikava, a Belarusian opposition activist currently serving an eleven-year prison sentence.
“LIMBO” explores themes of isolation and uncertainty through a selection of song cycles by composers Agata Zubel, Alla Zagaykevych, Yin Wang, Sven-Ingo Koch, and Maxim Shalygin. Vitrenko accompanies herself on the piano, creating an intimate setting that reflects the state of suspension experienced during recent social and political upheavals.
Alla Zagaykevych, a Ukrainian composer and musicologist, contributes “Signs of Presence” to the program. This piece blends whispers, Sprechgesang, and elements of Ukrainian traditional singing, showcasing her expertise in electroacoustic music and her deep understanding of Ukrainian folklore. Zagaykevych has been instrumental in promoting contemporary music in Ukraine, having founded the Electronic Music Studio at the National Music Academy of Ukraine and serving as the artistic director of various international electroacoustic projects. Maxim Shalygin, a Ukrainian-Dutch composer known for his innovative compositions, presents “Songs of Holy Fools” in this performance. This visionary cycle pushes the boundaries of vocal expression, reflecting Shalygin’s exploration of diverse musical techniques. His works have been performed at numerous international venues and festivals, and he continues to actively compose and participate in various musical projects worldwide. (en.wikipedia.org)
By intertwining personal and political narratives, “LIMBO” offers a poignant reflection on the complexities of the human condition in times of turmoil. The performance not only showcases contemporary compositions but also serves as a tribute to Kalesnikava and others affected by oppressive regimes.
