Alla Zagaykevych: Vela Invecti
Alla Zagayevych: Vela invicti for Violin, Flute, Double Bass and Electronics – part of the concert PLACES with the International Contemporary Ensemble during Ukrainian Contemporary Music festival in New-York.
Alla Zagaykevych – composer in residence of UCMF
“The Sails. The Ocean. Another dangerous journey. Among the high waves, the continuous wind, the loud voices of the “Sirens”.
The myth of Odysseus, told by Volodymyr Yermolenko in the novel “The Ocean Hunter,” seems to be about us.
About the loss of our land, our home, about our journeys. About the impossibility of returning, but the opportunity to persevere.
Our sails in the ocean, fluttering in the wind. We peer into the horizon between the waves, feeling hope and despair, despair and hope.
The theme of the work determined its structure and idea – drifting in the ocean. Dependence on the wind, on the waves, on the ocean.
The score introduces a virtual participant, in fact, the ocean part – in the form of a sonogram of the noise of waves of different intensities:
which determine the overall dramatic structure of the work. Depending on the dynamic profile of the waves, the musicians build the
overall texture of the work – sparse or intense, loud or quiet.”
This opening program explores the relationship between geography and imagination, portraying how Ukraine’s vast and varied landscapes — from the Carpathian Mountains to post-industrial mining towns — shape the sonic imagination of its composers. Featuring a new arrangement co-commissioned by International Contemporary Ensemble and UCMF.
