Arnold Marinissen: Rapprochement
Ensemble SCALA performs Arnold Marinissen’s ‘Rapprochement.
In Rewind-Forward, SCALA explores a wide range of repertoire, seamlessly moving between different styles. The concert opens uncompromisingly with music by Gijsbrecht Roijé, before delving into minimal music (Renske Vrolijk) and the elusive, shifting sounds of the Carrillo piano (Arnold Marinissen), culminating in a ‘note-bending sonic adventure’ (Danny de Graan). The morning concludes with two premieres of new pieces by Bill Alves and Jago Thornton. What all the music has in common: microscopically small intervals.
Ensemble SCALA was founded to showcase the widest possible range of new microtonal sounds. In addition to the Fokker organ, the concert also features a microtonal guitar and the enigmatic Carrillo piano, which is tuned in a mysteriously resonant 96-tone system.
