Calliope Tsoupaki: STORM

STORM is a unique collaboration between former Composer Laureate Calliope Tsoupaki and choreographers Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana. Between a composer who dares to think in terms of movement and choreographers who shape sound. Vital emotions and order, dance and music meet in a stormy performance with six dancers and three musicians.

STORM is a roller coaster of dance and music: from supported movement, iconic gestures and ritual precision to restrained and direct emotions performed by a young cast of six dancers and musicians David Kweksilber on (bass) clarinet, David Mackor on theorbo and Dominique Chabot on double bass . The young fashion designer Carlijn Veurink adds a layer to this with her autonomous sculptural costumes.

STORM sounds menacing, but dance and music are intimate, like an incantation of the storm. Sound and movement evoke an echo of ancient Greek folk festivals, alternately ritual and emotional.

Elements such as circular movements, restrained energy such as the calm before the storm and the passion of Greek dance and music form the basis. This echo gains momentum through the joint new ordering principles with which Calliope Tsoupaki and LeineRoebana merge dance and music.

LeineRoebana is known for her cross-disciplinary productions in which dance and music merge into one whole. Calliope Tsoupaki is influenced in her work by both early and contemporary music; Western composition techniques and the traditional sounds of Greece and the Middle East. Her music is characterized by its melodic character, warm sound and emotional quality.

Eighty-five years after the devastating bombing of May 14th, 1940, Rotterdam is a vital city that prefers to look ahead rather than over its shoulder. That is precisely why commemoration is so important, Lahav Shani believes: “Only when we know our origins can we stay on course.
