Darvishi: Never Belonged &
 Tsoupaki: Penelope

They have waited long enough

Three female composers give voice to three mythical women who are now – finally – allowed to tell their story.

On the initiative of Wonderfeel (in co-production with Lunalia, Antwerp Liedfest, Oranjewoud Festival, November Music & Mittelfest), Annelies van Parys, Aftab Darvishi and Calliope Tsoupaki create new, contemporary sounds for three women who have been living on the margins of the big picture for far too long. Greek myths have been waiting. They color their stories with new light, new nuance and new strength. Is Medea a vengeful monster or a mother consumed by compassion? Is Circe an evil witch or a heroine of great humanity? And what about Penelope’s supposedly defenseless waiting?

Writer Gaea Schoeters is looking for words that do these women justice: moving and liberating. Soprano Charlotte Wajnberg sings them to life. Three colorful soloists engage in an intense dialogue on Clarinet, duduk and qanun. British Natalie Haynes, stand-up classicist and compelling storyteller, provides the three characters with an introduction.

They Have Waited Long Enough is an initiative of Wonderfeel in co-production with Lunalia, Antwerp Liedfest, Oranjewoud Festival, November Music & Mittelfest.
