Gerard Beljon: Me miseram quid agam/Min al acmaaq

In his latest work ‘Me miseram quid agam/Min al acmaaq’, composer Gerard Beljon was inspired by the 12th-century Game from the Basilica of Our Lady and expressed his vision of what is happening in the world now, from the war violence in Ukraine to the horrors in the Middle East, in which the woman is desperately looking for her lost lover. In this work, Beljon unites Western music with sounds from the Middle East and, through Rianne Wilbers and Paloma Lázaro Arteaga, allows the upheaval to resound in Latin and Arabic that spans centuries, national borders and cultural backgrounds.

In this way the composer and choir build a musical bridge between East and West. An art form is created that is nourished by two different cultures, but more importantly; understanding, tolerance, connection, unity arise.
