Ig Henneman: Outside the rain has stopped
Accordion with string sounds, a challenging combination. The Dutch accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam takes up the challenge and joins forces with the Luna Quartet. Van Amsterdam is continuously working to enrich the repertoire of his special instrument. In the past he has already played accordion works by Gubaidulina and Nordheim, but Dutch composers are also on the menu.
For his recital with Luna Quartet, Van Amsterdam asked Christiaan Richter for a new work. In 2019, Richter already surprised with his transcendent accordion work Afflectingjuk, which could also be heard on November Music. Now he has released Afpiegelbreek, which, as it were, reflects on this earlier work. Just as a ray of light is bent in a prism and a spectrum of color differences can be observed through the refraction of the light, Reflection Break highlights subtle gradations in tension and color in a range of different harmonies.
The string quartet also plays a rhythmic and layered work by Ig Henneman. The intuitive, energetic, loosely structured flow of pianist/improviser Cecil Taylor is an important source of inspiration for this composition. Endless almost exhaustive variations caused by material that Ig Henneman often uses as an improviser. The loose strings are an essential color in the entire composition. The title is a sentence from The history of love, the novel by Nicole Krauss. The work has been selected as a Dutch broadcast for the ISCM International Society for Contemporary Music.
Concert is a part of November Music festival.
