Johan Wagenaar: Levenszomer
Witness tomorrow’s musicians today as the English Schools’ Orchestra and award-winning pianist Michael Bostock bring the symphonic power of Rachmaninov, Wagenaar, and Scriabin to life in an extraordinary display of lyrical beauty and young talent. Levenszomer (translated as The Summer of Life), Op. 21, is a lush late-Romantic symphonic poem composed by the prominent Dutch composer Johan Wagenaar in 1903. Subtitled as a “fantasy for orchestra,” this piece is celebrated for its warm orchestration, storytelling qualities, and rich emotional palettes typical of post-Romantic European music.
