Maxim Shalygin: Film ‘Raising waves’ (composer’s portait)
The Hague/Ukrainian composer Maxim Shalygin is known as a sound magician. Concerts and CDs featuring his work have been labeled cultural highlights of the year by the press several times.
In collaboration with Classical NOW! the film portrait ‘Raising Waves’ will premiere. Ukrainian filmmaker Anastasii Suprun-Zhyvodrova followed Maxim Shalygin and her team to Dniprodzerzhynsk, where he grew up in a huge flat. To overcome the depressing view, he created his own world for himself, which he wanted to translate into music as a composer. He went to study composition in Kyiv and became fascinated by the music of Louis Andriessen. This spurred him on to further study in The Hague. He continued to live there and became one of the most striking composers in our country. The film crew followed him in The Hague, at the Dag in de Branding festival, where the cameras were involved in the premiere of Severade for 9 cellos. They also visited the Kunstmuseum with him, where he often finds inspiration, and of course his house, where he composes. A colorful portrait. He discusses his views on music and composing extensively with the musicologist Stanislav Nevmerzytskyi.
